Ode to my younger years: Black Star

January 13, 2009 · Leave a Comment

Okay everybody yall know I have to give background on this. When I say I absolutely love, I mean this album, it is an under statement. I was in high school when this album came out and honestly I think this was a turning point, it solidified my appreciation and love for music in general. This album was thought provoking, I learned from it, the beats, the lyrics. Can’t say enough…so without any further delay…

Mos Def and Talib Kweli are Black Star: DEFINITION!!

…What you thought I was done LOL, naw…this is a two for one post but I’m gonna continue with the black star theme. Here is the other half of Black Star, the mighty Mos aka Mos Def. Real quick though, I love this song, I love the fact he did this in Cuba(I can’t wait to visit that Island…lift the embargo!!) Just zone out to this joint, ‘I want my people to be free…for black people to free…’

Caribbean hip hop festival?

December 27, 2008 · 2 Comments

-Ledisi/Angie Stone and Najee @ St. Lucia Jazz Festival

Seasons greetings everyone!

Let’s get right to it, I don’t have new artists to put up, I’m not posting any news…I just want to put some food for thought out there. Sooooo I’m chillin’ at home after braving the mall in search of some black heels, which I found!! I flipped on BET J(not regular BET, let’s be clear LOL) They were showing the 2007 Cayman Island Jazz festival. I started thinking, why hasn’t there been a Caribbean hip hop festival? A Turks and Caicos hip hop festival, Antigua etc. Hear me out, I know for a fact the hip hop generation is getting older and a festival such as this could work. I went to Rock the bells this past summer, attendance I believe was 16,000. I’ve been down to Miami when Radio One put on a hip hop festival, mad people traveled from everywhere. Young people will definitely travel to the caribbean for this! Who doesn’t like the caribbean LOL. I mean it would have to be a chill event, no diss to Plies and them, but I think the demographic would fit better with let’s say Common, Nas, De La soul, The roots, Jay-Z even. Throw in neo soul artists and new pop artists and you have a festival. I would love to take a trip to any caribbean island to see these artists and I know so many people would to. So it’s just food for thought, Bahamas hip hop festival anyone.  If I don’t post next week HAPPY NEW YEAR everyone and I wish you all a prosperous and blessed 2009!

Obama Appoints Scientist as Energy Secretary

December 16, 2008 · Leave a Comment

 This a Future Green Post

President Elect Obama appointed his ‘Green team’ I have to admit this is probably one of the best appointments thus far, just for the simple fact, he’s a scientist. Not a bureaucrat, politician, manager. Steven Chu is a physicist and a nobel prize winner. Peep the video

All I have to say is wow! This is  a video of a journalist who threw his shoes at President Bush while he was doing a press conference in Baghdad. People really can not wait till January 20th, not because of President Elect Barack Obama but just because it is the final day of President Bush’s Presidency. It’s been a long 8 years. Peep the video

I feel this is what this country needs, like ‘President Mos Def’ said, and I paraphrase ‘we’re going to start building stuff again…’  New jobs and he should throw in more education for everybody and make it Free, along with health care!

Generation We?

November 23, 2008 · Leave a Comment

Soooooo, on my daily commute I came across this study in the book store. I was just passing time until my train came. I didn’t have anything special I was looking for, as usual I wandered over to the African-American interest section. I looked down with all the book lining the bottom self and there was this book that looked like a text book called ‘Generation we’ I started flipping through it, I thought ‘hmmmm interesting…’ I ended up buying Nelson Mandela’s autobiography(I already started reading it!!) but on the back of the study was a website. I memorized the site and peeped it when I got home.

I’ve heard the word ‘millenial’ which seems to be the official title given to my generation. I guess the generational examination has begun. Apparently we are the largest generation in American history with there being 95 million of us born between 1978-2000(the eighties excess and Clinton years must have good LOL)

Peep the website and the video, post some comments because I really want to know what you think about this. I agree with much of what this study says and found the information very enlightening.
