R.I.P. Rap City Officially
October 1, 2008 · Leave a Comment
I’ll be honest I hadn’t been to allhiphop in a while, I just swung pass and saw that BET IS CANCELING RAP CITY This is sad for so many reasons, one the show had such a storied history, two the way it was allowed to flounder and dwindle down to literally nothing.
Quick trip down memory lane, I’m 25, will be 26 soon. I started watching rap city 1994 and stopped somewhere around 2004. That’s 10 years of my life with this show. Joe Clair/Big Lez early on, not to mention Joe Clair is from Maryland, BET was based in D.C. it was a source of pride for young people in my area. From Old school wednesdays to the various places the show actually traveled to, to interview guests. It was a well crafted show very in touch with it’s viewers. I literally used rush through my homework to watch rap city 4:00pm-6:00pm. I was in middle school when I started watching and I was college graduate when I stopped watching. This is probably the lowest BET has sank, when you give up a show that is the corner stone of your channel. The show was started in 1989, 19 years of history that in the end just got canceled, no send off show, just canceled!
Somebody bring back rap city circa early mid 90’s i.e. Video Soul, Caribbean rhythms, Teen Summit(for the teens now) Rap City, Screen Scene(yep I took it there) BET news. R.I.P. BET. Damn it’s shame.
Peace
