I would like to welcome everyone to the first ever post at the Soapbox on yocheckthisout. I should introduce myself, I am a freelance journalist who’s just trying to make moves and get herself out to the people more…SIKE! Naw, I’m just a 25 year old African-American woman who enjoys writing and loves the concept of blogging. First off to set the tone. I’m going speak on whatever I see/hear. Politics, sports, pop culture, world affairs…like I said whatever but I am a hip hop head for life!! Hence the url yocheckthisout. It could have been heycheckthisout, but nah that’s well for lack of a better word WACK. Growing up I was a wannabe b-girl. Seriously, I grew up in the country. It wasn’t like ‘the color purple’ country but still it wasn’t the city. So with all of my older cousins moving on from breakin’ in the late 80’s I was left with continuously repeating Breakin’ movies on HBO(It seems like Breakin’ 2:Electric boogaloo came on every other day in the late 80’s) Beat Street and rappin’…yall remember that movie rappin’ it was a Mario Van Peebles joint LMAO!! I remember they showed a lot joints on the African-American heritage theater with Ozzie Davis and Ruby Dee who remembers that!! WNUV for all my Bmore people.
Anyway anything hip hop I was on it, and still am. From QD3 films to reading davey d’s blog to my white on white air forces that only get worn on Saturdays.
That leads me to the title of this blog. I had the pleasure of attending the Rock the bells festival yesterday. Definitely a great event but one thing struck me. Why were we the crowd continuously being cussed at? I know some of yall will post some in depth replies, but for real. If you’re introducing an act hint: DJ why do you have to say ‘Put yo muthaf$%kin’ hands in the air for(insert somebody) Why not just say get ready for so and so, blah, blah, yada, yada. Now I know not everybody does this, but I was thinking, aaahhhh I’m grown, I have to work in a few hours, why are you cussing at me. I just think the emerging hip hop audience is not being fully addressed. Most of the people in that crowd were easily 25+ I know hip hop is from the streets,(insert random news segment on hip hop) but really at a certain point ‘I ain’t tryin’ to hear all dat’ Profanity in a song is one thing, even when Redman went into his call and response of ‘Say F%$k you Red Man’ while at first many were shocked, most people laughed it off…well because it’s Redman, I mean I’ll be dat…need I say more LOL But the cussing at the crowd is not necessary. The hip hop generation is getting older, while we’ll still put our hands up, I think puttin’ our muthaf$%kin’ hands up is something many of us are beyond. So note to all the DJ’s out there…chill a simple ‘put yo hands in the air and wave em like you just don’t care, if yall ready to see(insert somebody) say Oh…Yeah’ will do. Grant it, that phrase is probably close to 40 years old so why did it work so well then and seems ‘old school’ now that’s a WHOLE NOTHER blog.
